ZEF departments and research

Political and Cultural Change (ZEFa)

Boundaries and contested areas

"As a researcher, I wanted to understand why most peacebuilding initiatives have failed in Northern Kenya. My research dealt with violence among pastoralist groups in Northern Kenya. The study sought to add to the anthropological conceptualization of violence, by looking into ways how local Turkana and Samburu communities use violence to gain power at both the individual and collective levels." Economic and Technical Change (ZEFb)

Food security monitoring

"The increasing use of the internet and smartphones in developing countries has a big potential for early warning systems. I am currently implementing a new approach to the monitoring of risks to food security in cooperation with Welthungerhilfe, a large German NGO. We are piloting an innovative data collection initiative in Kenya, Afghanistan and Mali." Read the full interview with Regine Weber.

Ecology and Natural Resource Management (ZEFc)

Tracking waste: what really happens to our electronic devices

"I have observed the issue of electronic waste for quite some time and noticed that e-waste and related activities pose a huge challenge to the government, environmental managers and e-waste workers in Ghana. It also causes environmental and public health concerns for people and their livelihoods," tells Vincent Kyere, a doctoral graduate from Ghana. Read more about Vincent Kyere's research here.
